The Hungarian government funds various grant and scholarship programmes to facilitate the internationalisation of the Hungarian higher education system. Foreign students can apply for different study modes from bachelor to PhD programmes. The types of scholarship opportunities available for foreign students, including PhD students, are listed below in detail.

Stipendium Hungaricum

TheStipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme was launched in 2013 by the Hungarian Government. The core mission of the programme is to increase the number of foreign students in Hungary and to encourage Hungarian higher education institutions to attract top foreign students.

Students can apply for study programmes at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels, and preparatory courses as well. Apart from the tuition-free education, the programme provides a monthly stipend, medical insurance and housing allowance for the scholarship holders.

Doctoral programmes are available full-time (2 + 2 years) and part-time (partial exchange for 1 or 2 semesters) study modes.

Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship

The aim of the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship Programme is to give special support to the studies of foreign students with Hungarian roots in Hungarian higher education institutions.

The programme is available for the members of a Hungarian diaspora living in any country outside of the European Union, the Republic of Serbia or the Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine.

You can apply for three types of training; full-time degree programs (full undergraduate, master's or doctoral degree), part-time degree (one- or two-semester exchange in Hungary, with a foreign student status) non-full-time degree (one-year vocational degree) programs.

PhD in Hungary

When applying for a PhD in Hungary, there is no centralised application service for Hungarian PhDs. Instead, you can apply directly to a university (or its doctoral school) and seek admission to its doctoral programme.

Bilateral State Scholarships

Bilateral state scholarships are based on scientific and educational cooperation agreements signed by the governments of two countries. Similarly to the foreign partner, the Hungarian side offers scholarships for foreign students, researchers or lecturers in higher education institutions or in scientific or art institutions.

Available scholarship types include part-time or full-time degrees of bachelor, master or doctoral level, summer schools and short visits.

ERASMUS+

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe.

Erasmus+ offers mobility and cooperation opportunities in

CEEPUS

CEEPUS is a mobility scholarship programme in the field of higher education, designed to support student and teacher exchanges, the organisation of summer schools, special courses and student excursions by developing long-term academic cooperation between partner institutions within the participating countries. The programme strengthens the strategic role of the CEE region.

Applications can be submitted to accredited higher education institutions of the participating countries: Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia.

The CEEPUS mobility scholarship offers:

Student mobility for one semester or trimester for all study levels (3 to 5 months).
Short term mobility for students working on bachelor/master thesis, or doctoral dissertation ( 1 or 2 months).
Short term excursions and study visits.
